Sarah Palin, The Sky Is Falling! The Sky Is Falling!

Posted by Dan Tocchini on September 9th, 2008 filed in Confessions Of A Fanatic, The Lighter Side

What is all the drama about Sarah Palin? I have never seen anything quite like it.  The irony of it all. We have three candidates, Barak Obama, John McCain and Joe Biden who are all part of the 500 or so people who have collectively managed this country into the situation we find ourselves in today and yet each of them is touting change. Isn’t that a bit ironic?

Then along comes Sarah Palin. A small time politician from Alaska of all places. Ironically, a state that has the same meger number of delgates as Delaware, where Mr. Biden is the incumbent Senior Senator. A woman who has a very limited career in politics and some family issues that Lindsay Lohan and Puff Daddy have some moral opinions about, can you imagine that? Of all people. Now that is change as well as irony.

So why did John McCain choose her? I think she has already accomplished her job. She has drawn more attention and already caused more change in the Republican party and in the Presidential Campaign as well as in the focus of the press than any single candidate involved. Today I couldn’t believe how many magazines had her face on their front cover, from Time to US I counted at least four major publications. If people didn’t know who she was during the convention they do now, that is for sure.

The Dems now tell us that the sky is falling, that she is not experienced enough, lacks the character and judgment to be Vice President and is somebody who would surely be over their head if elected.  After all, “her daughter is pregnant out of wedlock,” “she obviously chooses her career over her children” and “her lack of experience!”  This coming from the party that brought us Ted Kennedy and Chapaquitic, Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, and now Barak Obama whose greatest accomplishment is that he possesses the most liberal voting record in congress. Not that the Republicans are any better, Richard Nixon and Watergate, Regan’s Iran Contra Sacandal and George W’s spending like a druken sailor.

My point is that if change is what we are looking for, we are getting it. This woman is obviously not part of the establishment because they really didn’t know anything about her when she burst upon the scene. And for that reason I like her. She cetainly has ruffled some feathers in her her home state of Alaska and she appears to be continuing to do the same in this election process. At the very least she has changed a boring, stogy process into a very interesting journey. I can’t wait for the debates just to see what surprises will emerge and I bet I am not the only one! So another change we can chalk up to her and John McCain is that more people will probably watch the debates this year than ever before! And she is only the candidate for Vice President. Remember in 2000 how excited you were to see the “historic debates” between Joe Lieberman and Dick Chaney and then again in 2004 with Dick Chaney and John Edwards? More irony!

Honestly, I doubt that anything will change significantly because of the entrenched special and corporate interest that seem to run this country.  I know that sounds cynical, but in my opinion it will take some catastrophic event for true change to come about. However, when I see the old guard get worked up like they are now, I do feel the possibility that somebody could get elected that isn’t as entrenched in the good ole boy network to actually take advantage of a possibility for change should a catastrophic event occurred while they were on watch. I would love to be wrong about that, it just seems that history plays out.

W. H. Auden put it this way: “We would rather be ruined than changed; we would rather die in our dread than climb the cross of the moment and let our illusions die.”

yo dan, its nice to hear your thoughts on Sarah Palin. I agree that she is refreshing and certainly a change; also, a great choice for the Republicans as it has garnered incredible media attention. Would I want her to be my President if Cheney kicks the bucket? Probably not. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Obama’s politics and voting record, and comparatively, not too stoked that McCain has voted with Bush 90% of the time.

One thing I do love about this election is that people seem to care and are entering into a political discussion unlike anything I have experienced. That is exciting for me.

And, for humor’s sake, I found this today on McSweeney’s and couldn’t stop laughing: I give you fragments from

edit: oops, by Cheney I meant McCain

A deluge of thoughts came to mind as I read your commentary about Palin. The first; our countries (U.S.A.) founding leaders never imagined professional politicians. I believe that is because they paid in blood sweat and tears (not the band) for most of the decisions they made regarding our country, even long after the Brit’s (no offense to my drink pards)let go of the thorn in their paws we represented. The second thought comes to mind is ” a heart beat away”. Could mercy and destiny be on our nation and that woman (Margret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi, Golda Mier) Barracuda Palin. I would like to end up with this thought. In the heat of battle as you are following someone up the proverbial hill (because surely as we sit here and play armchair QB’s we are in a cultural war that IS going to radically shift our nation for ever), who would you rather have lead you? Hair plugs, pretty man the I align with those who hate our nation flipflopper, ole ALL Guts and swinging for the fences at every bat? OR someone naive enough and caring enough to actually take one for the team.

    Allison,

You sound like a CNN sound bite. That line has been tossed around so long it is growing hair. While George has messed in his pants, no President can act unilaterally. That is why there is a balance of all power with the exception of certain powers in being Commander and Chief. Congress has as much to do with the failed decisions as Bush.

Your response is precisely why I believe there the only change we will see if either of these candidates get elected is either the first African American as President or the first woman as Vice President. If politicians continue with all the finger pointing and are unwilling to own their mistakes and their parties stand with them to correct the mistakes then there will be no change. People just want to point the finger and maintain an unwillingness to admit that they both were part of the Congress that has allowed The President to run amok. They have approved unprecedented levels of pork barrel spending. Obama himself has approved over a billion dollars worth in his short 4 years as a senator in Illinois.

Today our Congress is discussing bailing out Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac as well as the auto industry in Detroit. The gravy train is on.

If you want real change you might want to check out other candidates like Chuck Baldwin of the Constitutional Party to mention one. People like him who would make changes outside the mainstream media bias.

  5. J.R. Young Says:

Dan: You are exactly right about change for the US. Nothing will change until the system changes. The Cartel of banks that runs the money system in the US (and the world)controls everything. In 1913, 7 men created the Federal Reserve System, a national cartel of private banks. It’s purpose was to shift inevitable losses from the owners of these banks to the American taxpayers. We have just experienced this in the takeover of Fannie May and Freddie Max.
Changing the players (or actors)will not change the drama, musical or comedy that we are living in.
    JR

  6. J.R. Young Says:

PS. Dan - “Freddie Max” instead of Freddie Mac is obviously a Freudian slip as the expected debt thereof is 1.5 trillion dollars. Amazing. The federal government is now $405 billion dollars in debt. How does it feel?
Remember a billion minutes ago, Jesus was walking on the earth.

  7. Dan Tocchini Says:

Thanks JR…I just can’t stand thinking about all the bailing out. The subtext is, hey don’t worry, Uncle Sam is there to take care of you.

  8. Santiago James Says:

History belongs to the Intercessors… a new movement is rising, the Lovers of God are playing the strings of His heart. We have prayed and fasted that God would put a righteous man in the presidential seat, we thought it was going to be Mike Huckabee, thousands of Lovers gathered to pray and decree that there is still hope for this nation…. after Mike Huckabee stepped out of the scene, the elections up until now have been quite dull, as you say “a boring, stogy process”, We are living in a time that the intercessors will shape history, we prayed in 2004, although many voters are disappointed in Bush’s decisions he made, he has done more to end abortion greater than any other president… Palin with overturn Woe vs. Wade.

  9. Clare Albright Says:

Yes, Dan, I like Chuck Baldwin of the Constitutional party.

I like what you’re saying about ‘bail outs’ bein’ gravy trains!

Time to take responsibility instead of creating a welfare state.
