Tiger Not Out of the Woods

When I first heard of Tiger’s troubles I just ignored the stories. I mean, so what? Tiger Woods got into a wreck, the rest of us are trying to prevent our houses from being foreclosed on or prevent our cars from being repossessed. But the turn of events seem to be a welcomed distraction for people.
Perhaps it really isn’t about Tiger Woods as much as it is about human nature. How many times have you found yourself lying and with each lie your troubles increase. Reading the progression of Tiger’s debacle reminds me of one of those fairy tales told to pass wisdom on to the next generation.
Pinocchio’s nose grows with a lie, while Tiger Wood’s woes grow with his.
First it was rumors of affairs
Rumors about terrible injuries caused by the wreck came to be the result of his wife Elin Nordegren Woods frustrated attack on her husband due to his infidelities. Tiger Woods, the epitome of focus was so distracted by the attack that he ran his car right into a fire hydrant and crashed into a neighbor’s tree. And, today two weeks later the transformation from rumor to fact is complete with one reporter calling it “Mistressgate.”

The more our hero attempts to cover up the truth the greater his exposure. The more he resists the more his condition persists. My grandfather used to say, “the knots come through the comb.”
What causes somebody to pick up a golf club and beat their spouse? That is a pretty big knot! Maybe lying has a cumulative affect that is much greater than our nose growing.
My sense is that unless Tiger comes clean he won’t be out of the Woods for sometime and we will have plenty to distract us from our own knots.

My grandmother used to say “it will all come out in the wash”, and I have come to believe it does. Damn the wash hurts allot!! I am truly grateful that this virtue has been seared into my reasoning otherwise I would be one bad son of a bitch.. I know that no matter what I muttle up the light is just a confession away.

What strange, mixed up creatures we are….We create superheroes that we can idolize and then we turn on them and beat them to death when they disappoint us by being human. Tiger Woods has been in the limelight since he was a little boy. He’s a child prodigy, a star athlete, used by advertisers for financial gain, by educators to teach children that “you can be anything you want to be”, blah, blah, blah. He had no choice but to hide his sins…he couldn’t let people know that he wasn’t who THEY created him to be. Yes, what he did was a horrible betrayal of his wife, his children, his God…If he was a Democratic president of this country, he could keep his women under his desk in the oval office and we would give him a free pass, somehow blaming his wife fore being such a shrew. He needs prayer and some really good friends to stand with him and his family, not an entire country spitting on him.

I’ve been pondering what to write about the latest incident with Tiger Woods. It seems there are many ways to approach it.
But before I give you my take on it, a disclaimer. I don’t know very much about what really happened when Tiger crashed his car or what caused it. It’s not something I am all that driven to know the truth about. I’ve caught snatches here and there. If you watch TV or listen to the radio, or hang out where people gather, it’s almost impossible not to. So, I confess I don’t know the latest.
Having said that…I wonder why is TW’s “business” (or life, if you will, since the two seem to be intertwined) our (your, mine, the public’s) business anyway? Beyond the fact that it seems human nature to stick our noses into anyone and everyone else’s affairs, that is. The answer as I see it is: He’s made his “business”/life our business. He’s promoted himself through a multitude of product endorsements. He’s invited us to become one with him.
In that sense, he’s more than just a golfer, or even a very good golfer, or even the best that ever was (if one wants to go that far). He’s a star beyond his sport. Wait, he’s even more than that…he’s a superstar.
And what’s true is that once one becomes a star (let alone a superstar), one’s life/business is no longer one’s own. One has now become a public commodity. Once one uses one’s talents, personality, status, etc. to promote something to consumers, one’s life now becomes everyone’s business. Like it or not, once one “goes public,” one’s private life is no longer private. (How many celebrities have managed to keep their private lives private?)
And unfortunately, like all idols, it doesn’t take very much to be toppled from the pedestal and for the star to come crashing down to earth.
I wonder, too, are we (the public, you and me) really concerned about Tiger and his wife and family? Or are we just interested in the dirty details of our once sparkling favorite son so we can gossip with others and feel superior? Is part of our fascination with what happened a feeling that he’s not so superior after all? And as a corollary, that we’re not so inferior.
I feel for TW. Here’s a guy (just a person like the rest of us) who has a tremendous talent, whose parents nurtured that talent in a positive way, who came on the scene at just the right time, who has charisma, and who has overcome adversity, but still he’s just a man with all the foibles and faults that come with being human. What has his superstar status really gotten him?
I wonder, too, if there is someone Tiger can turn to now, someone he can share this experience with, someone who isn’t interested in him as a commodity or a meal ticket or a gravy train or a ticket to the big time. Because if there isn’t someone who cares about him as a person, then he is a poor man, indeed.
